In the foothills of the Balkan Mountains near the Danube stand the Belogradchik Rocks. These giant red sandstone and limestone towers rise up to 200 metres. Wind and water shaped them over millions of years, and local legends give many of them names and stories.
The highlight of the day is Belogradchik Fortress. Its walls are built right into the rocks, using the natural cliffs as part of the defences. From the upper courtyard you get the best view over the rock forest and the valley below.
