Veliko Tarnovo and Arbanasi Tour from Sofia

A full day in Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval capital of Bulgaria, and the old village of Arbanasi. Walk Tsarevets Fortress and the crafts street of Samovodska Charshia with a professional guide. Hotel pick-up included.

Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the 12th to the 14th century. Today its old houses climb the steep hills above the winding Yantra river, making it one of the most beautiful towns in the country.

With your guide you explore Tsarevets Fortress, where the palace of the Bulgarian tsars and the Patriarchal Church once stood. Then you stroll along Samovodska Charshia, a cobbled street of craft workshops from the Revival period. Here you can watch potters, woodcarvers and coppersmiths at work.

Just a few kilometres away lies Arbanasi, a village of stone merchant houses and richly painted churches. It feels like an open-air museum of the Bulgarian National Revival. In the evening you return to Sofia, and the tour ends at your hotel.
