A 3-day tour from Sofia: the Rhodope narrow-gauge railway, Gotse Delchev and Kovachevitsa, two nights in the spa village of Ognyanovo, a day in Kavala, Greece, with the Angitis cave, and Rila Monastery on the way back.
Three days through southern Bulgaria and northern Greece. You ride the narrow-gauge railway through the Rhodopes, the highest railway in the Balkans, and stay two nights in the spa village of Ognyanovo.
On day two you cross into Greece to see the Angitis cave, the second longest river cave in Europe, and the coastal city of Kavala with the house of Muhammad Ali Pasha. On the last day you visit Rila Monastery on your way back to Sofia.
Good to know: Bring comfortable clothes, walking shoes and a sun hat. Not suitable for wheelchairs or people with limited mobility. Pets are not allowed.
Day 1: the narrow-gauge railway and the Pirin villages
- Pick-up in Sofia, 08:00–08:20
- Velingrad, then the narrow-gauge railway to Dobrinishte station (about 13:00)
- Gotse Delchev: guided walk, the Regional Museum, free time
- Kovachevitsa village
- Ognyanovo: check in at the hotel and time for the spa
Day 2: Kavala and the Angitis cave, Greece
- Departure after breakfast, 09:00
- Angitis cave, about 10:15
- Kavala: guided walk in the old town, the house of Muhammad Ali Pasha, free time
- Return to the hotel, about 18:30–19:00
Day 3: Rila Monastery and back to Sofia
- Departure after breakfast, 09:00
- Rila Monastery, about 11:30
- Return to Sofia around 15:00: drop-off anywhere in the city or at the airport
